UWC ISAK Japan
UWC ISAK Japan (formerly International School of Asia, Karuizawa) is located in a beautiful resort town in Nagano Prefecture, host of the 1998 Winter Olympics.
Student profile: Currently 155 students from 39 nationalities. We offer a pre-IB program for Grade 10 students, in addition to the IBDP.
Founded: August 2014
Campus and facilities: The college is located in a resort community in the town of Karuizawa (pop. 20,000), approximately 70 minutes from Tokyo by bullet train. Designed by award-winning architects and surrounded by nature, the campus sits in harmony with its surroundings, creating an inspiring environment for living and learning.
Campus facilities include modern school buildings and residential houses built with sustainable materials, a gymnasium with full basketball court, and a sports field. The college has committed to build a fifth residential building which will enable increased enrollment up to 250 students.
We encourage students to fully experience the greater community by enjoying the public amenities available in Karuizawa, including hiking trails, tennis courts, golf courses, ski slopes, and ice rinks.
Specialisms: We believe not only in the power of education, but also in the power of our students to change the world. Every student participates in our leadership program which combines the practice of mindfulness with design innovation. Students have the opportunity to interact with entrepreneurs, business professionals, and influencers on a regular basis, and our design lab encourages students to transform their ideas into reality.
Beyond the classroom: Regular excursions give students the chance to explore different aspects of Japanese culture, including tea ceremonies, castles, hot springs, temples, theater performances, wilderness areas and museums. Students are encouraged to get involved with the local community through both service and their personal interests; the college participates in local festivals as well as hosts community events on campus.
Student autonomy is emphasized and encouraged. All clubs, activities and service projects are student-initiated and student-led. There are currently 40+ clubs and activities to choose from at UWC ISAK Japan – or students can start something new!
Project Weeks give students the chance to fulfill the mission of their service projects, travel abroad to places like Nepal, Vietnam and Thailand, or to work locally to bring about positive change. Projects have included earthquake relief, creating rural libraries, animal protection, English language camps, supporting the LGBT community in Japan, and hosting leadership workshops for young children.
As a school, we aim to create an environment in which students learn to understand and appreciate different perspectives, challenge themselves academically and emotionally, and develop their innate potential as leaders and change-makers for the greater good.
