On 14 September 2018, UWC International issued a statement about Amaya's detention and published an update about her situation on 20 September. We continue to follow her case closely and our thoughts are with Amaya and her family as they face the upcoming court hearing scheduled for later today. 

All over the world, the UWC community has been mobilizing people to make sure our support for Amaya is heard loudly across the globe with a view to ensuring her fair treatment and a court proceeding in line with the rule of law. See, for example:

  During the Sept. 21 Inspire Change Cafe on the Montezuma campus, UWC-USA Nicaraguan students shared their experiences of the political crisis in their country since April 2018. UWC-USA student-led groups Global Issues Solidarity and Amnesty International organised a petition drive demanding Amaya Coppen's release and took photos expressing solidarity and support for Amaya as well as the people of Nicaragua who have been so deeply affected by this crisis. These groups are continuing to organise projects to support Amaya as well as bring awareness to the crisis in Nicaragua.
