Amala
Founded by two UWC alumni, Amala's objective is to provide young refugees with the skills they require to overcome obstacles and grow towards becoming a generation of empowered individuals.
It is a social enterprise which enables learners who are displaced and affected by conflict to access secondary education programmes, using a blended learning (online and offline) approach. Their mission is to use transformative education to create opportunities and inspire positive change in the lives of refugees and their communities.
Amala has developed the first international high school curriculum for young people who are displaced and also offers short programmes in areas such as peace-building, ethical leadership and social entrepreneurship. Their programmes enable young people to develop agency, create opportunities and make change.
UWC and Amala have jointly developed a foundational changemaker programme for refugees, with the support of Rise. This programme has been offered annually since 2020 by Amala course leaders in the Kakuma refugee camp in Kenya, and was extended to refugee students in Amman, Jordan, in 2023. Participation in this course equips young refugees with the necessary skills to pursue further education locally and internationally and develop their own enterprises.
