Overview
The Teacher Librarian at UWC Maastricht creates an inclusive, vibrant, and resource-rich learning environment aligned with UWC’s mission of fostering peace, sustainability, and intercultural understanding. By integrating the library program into the school’s academic framework and collaborating with faculty and staff, the Librarian supports students in becoming informed and engaged global citizens. The Librarian ensures that resources and services align with curricular needs, support academic research, and contribute to the school’s broader educational objectives, fostering a love for learning, cultural awareness, and critical thinking.
The Librarian’s role will aim to:
Provide leadership and expertise necessary to ensure that the school’s library program is aligned with the mission and goals of the school and is an integral component of the learning/instructional program in order to offer students the encouragement they need to thrive at UWC Maastricht.
Establish, develop and manage the smooth operation of the library alongside teaching appropriate library, research and literacy skills to individuals, small groups and whole classes across the age range 11-19 in the school.
Create and maintain a visually and intellectually stimulating learning environment which supports and enhances the delivery of the school’s educational programmes.
Ensure the library is the beating heart of the school.
Key Responsibilities
Administration and Planning
- Develop, implement, and evaluate the library’s programmes, policies, and services in support of UWC’s educational mission and instructional goals.
- Prepare and manage the library budget to ensure optimal resource allocation.
- Serve on school committees, including curriculum and grade-level teams, contributing relevant insights as needed.
- Plan for library facilities and collaborate with other UWC campus libraries to enhance resource sharing.
- Collect and report library usage statistics to provide valuable insights to school leadership.
- Communicate regularly with the school community to promote library services and initiatives.
- Design and maintain a modern, welcoming library space that meets the needs of 21st-century learners.
Instructional and Curriculum Support
- Facilitate student inductions to the library, delivering skills training and supporting class visits to ensure students can fully engage with library resources.
- Collaborate with teachers to integrate library materials into the curriculum, enhancing instructional activities with a diverse range of resources.
- Provide academic support for research projects such as Extended Essays, Internal Assessments, Personal Projects, and other inquiry-based learning tasks.
- Organise library events, including book fairs, author visits, and clubs, to foster a passion for reading and lifelong learning.
- Coordinate class visits and provide tailored instruction in library usage, academic integrity, and research skills in both individual and small-group settings.
- Serve as a resource specialist, helping students and faculty select and use instructional materials effectively.
IT and AI
- Oversee and implement library-specific IT systems to improve access, enhance search functionalities, and ensure smooth catalogue management.
- Educate students and staff on responsible and ethical AI use, particularly in research, information gathering, and project work.
- Integrate emerging digital resources, including AI-powered research databases, to expand students’ access to cutting-edge information and diverse perspectives.
- Stay informed about technological advancements in library science, adopting innovative tools and systems to maintain a forward-thinking library environment.
Resource Management
- Develop, update, and publicise a library materials selection policy that aligns with UWC’s mission and values.
- Keep up to date with professional journals, publisher catalogues, and other selection aids, sharing relevant resources with staff.
- Engage with sales representatives and communicate new and relevant resources to the school community.
- Collaborate with staff and students to evaluate and select library materials and equipment that meet diverse academic and cultural needs.
- Organise the library collection to maximise accessibility, maintaining inventory and circulation systems for efficient resource management.
- Classify, catalogue, and manage the library’s materials and equipment to ensure a broad and current selection for students and staff.
General Responsibilities
- Support the vision, ethos, culture, and policies of the school.
- Promote high standards across all areas of school life, with a focus on student progress and success.
- Comply with the professional duties outlined in the staff code of conduct.
- Commit to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of all students, ensuring their safety and well-being.
Education degree and Professional competencies:
- At least a completed teaching degree and Library training
- Recent librarian experience in a similar school environment, with knowledge of IB programmes preferred
- Proficient in English with excellent communication skills
- Competent in library-specific IT applications
Terms of Employment / Remuneration
You will get a contract of employment under Dutch law: the initial contract is for a year, until August 1, 2026.
The package will be commensurate with the responsibilities of the position, according to the Dutch Collective Labour Agreement for Secondary Education (‘CAO VO’). The salary is fitting to the vacancy.
Participation in the school’s pension plan via the ABP Retirement/Pension Fund.
Support in the application for the ‘30% Facility for Incoming Employees’ with the Dutch Tax Authorities (if relevant).
Location: UWC Maastricht, the Netherlands.
To be able to work in the Netherlands, a (foreign) staff member must be able to successfully apply for:
- a police check from the country of origine and the country currently staying.
- Residence and work permits for the Netherlands.
- A Dutch VOG (certificate of good conduct).
UWCM will assist in the application process for residence and work permits and VOG.
