Davis Philanthropies commits 15 million USD annually to support 350 students

19 November 2024

UWC is thrilled to announce that long-term UWC patrons, Shelby and Gale Davis, are increasing their support for the UWC Dare to Dream scholarship programme.

This increase in funding will enable up to 350 UWC students from less advantaged backgrounds to attend UWC schools and colleges each year and further incentivises the UWC community and its supporters to join the Dare to Dream initiative, helping to expand UWC’s model of education and impact even further.

About Dare to Dream

Launched in 2018, Dare to Dream is a UWC scholarship programme that opens doors for talented young people who might not otherwise imagine a UWC education. The programme enables students from around the world to experience UWC’s unique education model, fostering diverse perspectives and a commitment to peace and sustainability.

Commenting on the additional support for Dare to Dream, Shelby Davis said:

"I strongly believe that the world would be a better place if more UWC magic was sprinkled throughout the world. I work to help with that in two ways. First, through the Davis UWC Scholars Program, which this year will bring almost 4,500 UWC graduates to partner universities in the US. Second, through the Dare to Dream Programme, which aims to make a UWC education possible for students from less advantaged backgrounds. I'm thrilled to help expand the Dare to Dream Programme, which will now reach 350 students per year. I hope others will join me in creating opportunities for students from all over the world to access a life-changing UWC education."

Impact of Dare to Dream

Since Dare to Dream was launched in 2018, a total of 1259 students, selected by over 150 national committees, have attended one of the 18 UWC Schools and Colleges on full scholarships through the programme.

The programme’s impact is made possible by a dedicated network of UWC national committees, which operate in more than 150 countries. These volunteers identify young people with exceptional promise through a robust selection process, ensuring that students from all backgrounds have the opportunity to access UWC’s unique educational experience, regardless of their financial means. At UWC schools and colleges, Dare to Dream scholars, alongside their peers, develop leadership and changemaking skills that they carry forward, creating a positive impact on their communities and beyond.

By deepening their commitment to Dare to Dream, the Davis family are reiterating their confidence in the entire UWC movement and extending an invitation to continue expanding its scale and impact.

Faith Abiodun, Executive Director of UWC International said:

"We are extremely grateful to Shelby & Gale Davis, and Phil Geier, for their continued support of our movement. More importantly, their increased commitment will change the lives of many more young people, using education as a force for peace and sustainability. This also demonstrates renewed confidence in - and appreciation of - the Dare to Dream scholars, as well as the hard work of UWC schools & colleges and UWC national committees."
