UWC Mostar wins Goran Bubalo peace award

21 September 2024

The recent peace conference at UWC Mostar, themed Building Peace: Global Challenges Today, brought together students, educators and activists to highlight the role of education in driving peace and understanding. Through workshops and discussions, participants explored global conflicts and ways to build resilient communities.

During the event, UWC Mostar received the prestigious Goran Bubalo peace award for its work in promoting multi-ethnic understanding and peace education in Bosnia and Herzegovina and beyond. This award, named after Goran Bubalo, recognises a renowned peace activist who dedicated his life to promoting dialogue and human rights in post-war Bosnia and Herzegovina. His legacy continues through institutions like UWC Mostar, which bridges divides and fosters understanding among diverse communities.

Founded in post-conflict Bosnia, UWC Mostar brings together students from over 70 different countries, helping them develop tolerance and critical thinking. The award ceremony was supported by the Local Strengths programme, a five-year initiative of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) aimed at building social cohesion and strengthening local communities in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
