UWC students perform at South African National Arts Festival

Seven Waterford Kamhlaba UWC students will perform at the South African National Arts Festival in Grahamstown, which takes place from July 2nd – 11th . They will perform ‘Diary of a nobody’, a production created by seven senior Waterford student actors.

There are four performances taking place as part of the Festival’s Fringe Programme. Neil Cave, Theatre Arts teacher at Waterford and one of the directors of the piece says “The production is an exploration of giving testimony to the lives of apparently insignificant individuals, all inspired by a variety of real people known to the students and representative of the international student body at Waterford. It allows us a glimpse into the complexity, the laughter and the pathos, the tragedy and madness of the human psyche with a variety of performance techniques used in the telling of the stories. Not only is this an unparalleled educational experience for the students, but it will be a unique Swaziland and international presence at the Festival.”

This is the fourth year that Waterford Kamhlaba students have taken ‘Kamhlaba productions’ to the festival, one of the leading arts festivals in Southern Africa.

Diary of a nobody premiered at local venue House on Fire on Monday 29th June, an Arts Venue near the Waterford campus which was set up by a Waterford gradate Jiggs Thorne . A group of 45 Waterford staff and students are travelling to Grahamstown to support the production and enjoy the festival.
